Hello,

I've been considering writing a script for a story I have. I have some experience writing stories (fiction) but I have never actually written a script before so I am reading a few on the Internet to get the hang of it. There is one thing I don't understand. Sometimes a line of the script reads "Beat."

I've seen this word repeated in at least two scripts: "Signs" and "Knight Moves".

Could anyone please tell me what "Beat" stands for?

Thank you very much.

LG

Beat - is Hollywoodesque for pause (take a moment).

Hope this helps.

Beat should also be avoided if you can. There are more colorful ways to denote a pause in action/dialogue.

...a tumbleweed blows by...

See? :-)
