How much should a screenwriter receive as an independent contractor from the adaptation of a script to film?

Don't understand your question -- adaptation of a script to a film? If it's already in script form then screenwriter probably shouldn't expect much.

I don't quite understand - if I write a movie and sell the script to a company to produce shouldn't I get something upfron and a percentage of royalties?
